History
Born to an aristocratic family that were thought of as 'vampires' due to their ancestors being rather athletic to the point of abnormality, having naturally pointed ears and canines, living in a weathered castle, being of Transylvanian nationality and, most suspiciously, being seen drinking blood. (which coincidentally was animal, not plume/human and was a temporary cure for weakness/dizziness due to a hereditary lack of iron thus causing their pale appearance)
Parents were lords of a town by a Transylvanian forest and mountain, that were all wary of the family, but could not do anything because of the Chiroscu family power. They raised Lucian to be compassionate and to look beyond physicality unlike the townsfolk whose children would whisper and avoid Lucian. Lucian stayed this way externally despite the teasing (though grew weary and insecure) until he was 15, when a crazed citizen started an uprising and ended up tying Lucian's parents to a stake and burning them, before which Lucian was instructed to hide in one of the many secret chambers in the castle. The citizen did this hoping to become the new lord and take over the castle and roll in the wealth. Lucian upon hearing this was outraged that his parents died for mere material gains and when the citizen attempted moving in the castle, Lucian would 'haunt' it, pretending to be the spirit of himself that starved to death and threatened to drain the citizen's blood and soul (complete bull****). This scared him off and Lucian's castle was deemed haunted. Lucian then became very careful whom he trusted in fear that they would only use him for material gain. Lucian had shut off his emotions other than cold arrogance to everyone except those he trusted prior to the burning.
Before their deaths, Lucian's parents were very kind and generous and during a vicious Romanian blizzard put up Benjamin and his father, who were backpacking across eastern Europe at the time for the fortnight, during which Benjamin and Lucian became 'BFFs'. After the fortnight, Benji and Lucian would write to each other as often as their schedules permitted, both being extremely busy (Benjamin with being a farmhand and child minder and Lucian having aristocratic responsibilities and tutelage). At the ages of 14, it was discovered that Benjamin would be on a 7 year expedition trek to the top of the highest mountain in Scandinavia to scatter his father's ashes and would not be seen by Lucian during that time and they agreed to have one final game of chess and meet up again after his quest.
After Lucian's parents' deaths, at the age of 21, having lived in the abandoned castle for 6 years, citizens began to question whether or not the castle was actually haunted and ventured upwards. Upon learning this, and knowing that haunting would not work a second time, Lucian, enraged in seeing 'the citizen' again, waited until they were well inside the castle before sealing the doors an burning the castle down, taking with him many mementos and enough gold to last a lifetime.
Upon his return from his journey, Benjamin returned to Romania to visit Lucian and was surprised, to say the least, at seeing the castle as rubble and in a moment of panic assumed Lucian dead. Refusing to believe this, a gut feeling spurred Benjamin to pay one last visit to the secret meadow between the mountains that they used to stargaze in and much to his joy and relief, found Lucian sleeping in their weathered but not gone fort they built so long ago.

Other: Fear
Lucian has eisoptrophobia, the fear of mirrors and reflections; or more specifically, his own. Growing up an aristocrat already pushes walls between one and the rest of society; living in 'another world' and being held to higher standards. Growing up with bat-like ears and a forked tongue only heightens that. Since he was young, Lucian was subject to cruel jokes and harmful pranks about his appearance.
If so many people believed he was a monster, who was to say it wasn't true? Lucian had come to fear the monster others saw in him and he believes seeing its face in the mirror would bring out this monster. His only solace, his best friend, had been forced to move back to the other side of the world. Alone, Lucian holed himself in his castle with the steely resolution to greet any cruelty with cold arrogance and save his tears for himself.

Short Story; Maybe We'll Meet Again
The days were not numbered, no; they were gone all together.
Lucian’s mind played back all the times they had spent together as though they were yesterday. Flashes of vivid colour danced across his vision in an increasingly hazy flurry of memories. The uncertainty settled in; did he want them to stop? Was it less painful to just let go? Maybe.
But he couldn't.
The memories of building snowmen, watching the stars and simply having Benjamin by his side, through all the pain and teasing were all too precious.
The sound of their laughter resonated within his head. Haunting him.
The soft light of the candle caressed their dark, forlorn faces as they stared knowingly at the chequered board; this was their final game for the night. For some time.
"Checkmate." Lucian’s voice cut through the dense, stale air.
The ivory king toppled, clattering mercilessly against the board. Pride welled within him as a sly grin crept upon his face, his frigid golden eyes glittering in amusement for a mere moment before his world came crashing down.
An uneasy silence settled between them, broken only by the small hiss of the candle. Lucian's breath hitched in his throat as he shift his face downward;
"I guess this means-"
"We'll have to go star gazing again when I return." Benjamin finished, a small, sad smile on his soft face.
Lucian looked up, dazed for a second before his lips curled upwards in not a smirk, but a true smile.
"I'd like that"
